Scarlett and Rosie March are sisters. At a young age they are attacked by a fenris werewolf and have suffered because of it. Scarlett lives with the memory and scars from the attack, while Rosie lives with her overly obsessed sister who relies on her to "do the right thing. This retelling of the classic little red riding hood is a modern take. Two girls live in the present time, however don't seem well off enough to carry phones which probably would have helped in some of their troubles.
There's a boy who also hunts and is older than both the March sisters, who becomes a love interest, but is a little predictable. I found the story a bit dry for the first half, teenage girl sisters arguing about their lives. The second half was more angst-filled and the plot gets a little better when they go into the big city to hunt.
The climax is very late in this particular work and then rushes to an ending. It was decent but fairly predictable.

Scarlet March lives to hunt the Fenris--the werewolves that took her eye when she was defending her sister Rosie from a brutal attack. Armed with a razor-sharp hatchet and blood-red cloak, Scarlett is an expert at luring and slaying the wolves. She's determined to protect other young girls from a grisly death, and her raging heart will not rest until every single wolf is dead.
Rosie March once felt her bond with her sister was unbreakable. Owing Scarlett her life, Rosie hunts ferociously alongside her. But even as more girls' bodies pile up in the city and the Fenris seem to be gaining power, Rosie dreams of a life beyond the wolves. She finds herself drawn to Silas, a young woodsman who is deadly with an ax and Scarlett's only friend--but does loving him mean betraying her sister and all that they've worked for?

From the second page of this book when a man's smile simultaneously faded and grew more forced, to the st page when the sister's entangled their arms around each other and sniffed each other's hair, I hated every single thing about this book.
Clearly, the writing was a problem. It was awkward, contradictory, and stilted.
I wasn't expecting the plot to break barriers, but the big "twist" was so badly telegraphed that I saw it pages before it was revealed. Scarlett was one of the most unlikable characters in the history of literature. There's a difference between damaged human and emotionless sociopath. I had heard the book had a questionable scene involving Scarlett, Silas, and the "Dragonfly girls" [club goers].

Not only was the scene pretty upsetting, with both main characters expressing some disgusting ideas about women, the entire book was. Since the Fenris, a male-only species of predators, attack beautiful, flirtatious women of a certain age, they, intentionally or not, become an allegory for sexual assault. To then spend the whole book talking about how if Rosie had just tried harder and been more aware and less pretty and firty, is truly disturbing.

I think readers who are interested in fairy tale-inspired stories may want to check out Alethea Kontis. She has a YA series about the Woodcutter sisters. Both are Amazon serials. The series also addresses things like gender identity, family, fate vs choice, and the idea of a monomyth, and there are some secondary romances of all sexualities! One of my favorite fairy tale retellers, but maybe not modern enough for some, is the British author Eleanor Farjeon. It was surprising how different the original stories were, especially Little Red Riding Hood. Thanks for the great article! I grew up in Germany in the late 80s and early 90s, and back then I was still raised with the old fairy tales.
Kingfisher, in that order. Thanks for this article! I love fairy tale re-tellings. It is a gritty, futuristic series which starts as a Cinderella tale and goes through a few others as the series progresses. It is wonderful with beautiful world building and themes of humanity, love, loyalty, socio-economic classes. The first one is Cinder. So many things mentioned, I love — especially the Indexing series please let there be more! Alethea Kontis also has fairytale themed books, like her Woodcutter Sisters series. The narrator is a snarky rat-shifter in love with a swan-shifter. Kingfisher, author of rather dark YA.
My favorite fairy tale has always been Beauty and the Beast. The Vixen and the Vet by Kate Regnery is an excellent contemporary version.

Entreat Me by Grace Draven is a better representation of the original story, as the magic is still a major part of the tale. I am always on the lookout for more Beauty and the Beast! The fary tale anthologies edited by Teri Windling and Ellen Datlow have some really great retelling of fairy tales.
ASH by Malinda Lo is excellent. I also really enjoy T. Patricia Mckinley writes beautiful fairy-tale like stories, with amazing, lyrical prose. While not strictly speaking retellings of popular fairy tales at least none that I can recall at the moment , there are common themes in her novels that give them a magical, once-upon-a-time feel.
